Bathroom Cabinets - Ideas That Make Sense
First and foremost, a bathroom cabinet must accomodate the needs of the people living in
the home. That means space is the key consideration. Too small a cabinet and you have to
expand your storage area into the hallway linen cupboard. Too large a bathroom cabinet (can
it ever be too large?) and you will cramp the bathroom space you have. Listen
carefully...and you will hear the sound of dents when you open the bathroom door...This brings us to step one in the remodelling or upgrading of a bathroom. PLAN, Plan and
plan some more.
Since large bathrooms are easier to work with, let's concentrate on the smallish bathroom,
first. Faced with minimal space, you should think tall and slender in the storage requirements area. Remember, for maximum space in a small bathroom, choose a wall hung sink, pedestal sink or small bathroom cabinet with sink (aka - a bathroom vanity). This choice will work best when using the wall area to hang a wall mounted bathroom cabinet (commonly called a bathroom cupboard) for the storage space you need. Using the wall gives you more floor space and a good feeling of openess.
Another way to give the impression of having more space, is to consider narrow bathroom cabinets with pull out drawers and open tempered glass shelves. You will probably appreciate more wood than glass for one simple reason - wood is wonderful for warming up a room. Since bathrooms can be quite cold looking, think wood whenever possible. Like wicker hampers, wood bench and chairs, stained wood over painted, etc.
Then again, if cool modern tones are more appealing to you, and refinishing rather than refurnishing is all your budget will allow, a faux finish resembling marble on your current cabinet can also do the trick. In fact you can repaint your present bathroom cabinet to blend in with the decor you have.
Bathroom cupboards are different than cabinets as they tend to be placed on the wall. These are wall-hung units for the bathroom and are more suited to smaller bathrooms. Don't confuse a medicine cabinet with a bathroom cupboard. Medicine cabinets tend to be rather shallow in depth and function more as a depository for the smaller items you need on a daily basis.
Bathroom cupboards have more depth and can accomodate larger items like toilet paper and even towels though bathroom linen cabinets would be more preferable (depending on available space).
